The Gendered Academy: Women’s Career Progression in Pakistani Universities

Academy in Pakistan is a gendered space that manifests and nurtures various forms of inequalities. This paper examines women’s experiences working Pakistani academies focusing primarily on factors influencing their career progression. Data for this drawn from larger qualitative research the women academy. Phenomenological interviews were carried out with fourteen participants including professors, associate assistant lecturers two Public universities Pakistan. The unveils struggles academics sustaining academy due to prevailing gender norms. Several organizational challenges narrated by including; difficulties conducting publishing academic research, discrimination appointments promotion practices, workplace favoritism, lack networking opportunities, absence mentors junior faculty. Resultantly, irrespective ranks, qualifications, skills, confidence, feel frustrated find it difficult contribute effectively teaching research. contributes global debates inequalities experienced These findings call more gender-balanced approach include as equal stakeholders.
